Vegan
Not suitable
Beef fat in oil is animal-derived.
Gluten-Free
Not suitable
Shared fryer with breaded fried chicken; seasoning may contain gluten.
Dairy-Free
Likely safe
No dairy in oil itself; shared fryer with chicken (some marinated in buttermilk).
Kosher
Not suitable
Beef fat disqualifies kosher status.
Halal
Not suitable
Beef fat from non-halal source disqualifies halal status.
Bojangles is the third chain on the atlas with beef in the fry oil — alongside McDonald's (beef flavor in par-fry oil) and Steak 'n Shake (100% tallow). Per direct corporate confirmation to Foodbabe (and reaffirmed by Go Dairy Free in 2026), Bojangles uses "All Fry ZT" — a blended liquid shortening made from canola oil and beef fat. This applies to both their distinctive Bo-Tato Rounds (round potato bites, similar to large tater tots) and their seasonal Bo* Fries. For vegetarians, vegans, kosher, halal, and alpha-gal-affected diners, Bojangles fries are not an option.

Ingredients, line by line

Bo-Tato Rounds & Bo* Fries — annotated

  • Potatoes Fine — Bo-Tato Rounds are formed from grated/diced potato; Bo* Fries are standard cut.
  • Canola oil + beef fat blend ("All Fry ZT") Beef · Animal-derived — Per Bojangles directly to Foodbabe and Go Dairy Free.
  • Bojangles seasoning blend Fine — Paprika, garlic, onion, black pepper, chili-spice mix. Gluten-free per the seasoning analysis.

Bojangles does not publish a full retail-style ingredient statement for either fry product. Per Foodbabe's direct corporate communication and reaffirmed by Go Dairy Free in February 2026, the fryer oil is the canola+beef-fat blend.

The fourth chain still using beef in fries After McDonald's (beef flavor + wheat/milk in the par-fry seasoning) and Steak 'n Shake (100% beef tallow as of January 2025), Bojangles joins the list. Unlike Steak 'n Shake's recent reversion or McDonald's complicated "beef flavor" formulation, Bojangles has used beef fat in their oil consistently since the chain was founded. It's part of the Southern fast-food tradition — Krystal also uses beef fat at some locations, as does Cook Out (per various reports).
A note on alpha-gal syndrome As we noted in the Steak 'n Shake entry: alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to mammalian meat and fat (including beef tallow), typically acquired through tick bites. People with alpha-gal should be aware of any chain that fries in beef fat — Bojangles is one of them.
What about palm oil reports? Some recent online comments (late 2024) claim Bojangles switched to palm oil. We could not find primary-source confirmation of this change. Bojangles' own customer service responses, Foodbabe's documented exchange with the company, and Go Dairy Free's February 2026 update all still report the canola+beef-fat blend. We're going with the best-attested information. If Bojangles publicly confirms a switch, we'll update this entry — corrections welcome at corrections@frypedia.com.
