Zaxby's is a Southeast chicken chain with a clean fry recipe and the by-now-familiar chicken-fryer problem. The crinkle fries themselves contain no major allergens as ingredients. But Zaxby's entire menu is built around breaded chicken fingerz, Fried White Cheddar Bites, Fried Pickles, and Veggie Eggrolls — all wheat-breaded, all in the same oil. Per Zaxby's own disclosure: "prepared on shared equipment and in shared facility with menu items that may contain Milk, Eggs, Fish, Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Soybeans, and Sesame."

Ingredients, line by line

Crinkle Fries — annotated

  • Potatoes Fine — Crinkle-cut, frozen supplier product.
  • Refined soybean oil Soy (exempt) — Highly refined soybean oil is FDA-exempt from allergen labeling.
  • Salt Fine

Zaxby's allergen guide confirms the fries do not contain major allergens as ingredients. Specific supplier ingredient statements are not published publicly. All Zaxby's fried foods cook in a blend of highly refined soybean oil.

The fifth chicken chain, same fryer problem Zaxby's joins Chick-fil-A, KFC, Popeyes, Raising Cane's, and Wingstop as chicken-focused chains on this atlas. Of those, only Chick-fil-A has solved the shared-fryer problem (a dedicated canola-oil fry fryer separate from the chicken fryer). The rest all suffer from the same structural issue — if the menu headliner is breaded fried chicken, the fry fryer is a hostile environment for gluten-free diners. Zaxby's is no exception.
